Royal Caribbean's CEO Says Comedy Isn't Going Anywhere. The Comedy Clubs Might Disagree.

Still: Royal Caribbean Blog YouTube, "Everything Royal Caribbean Confirmed, Denied, and Hinted Coming Next!" · https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldEdXQbnH1s
The short answerAt Sunday's Common Ground Q&A on the President's Cruise, Royal Caribbean Blog's Matt Hochberg says Michael Bayley seemed to do a double take when asked why comedy is disappearing. As Hochberg relays him, the plan was not to remove comedy, more is coming, and the line took the venue away. That reading is one auto-transcript, and a garbled word means it is a paraphrase, not a clean quote. Nancy Ramos shut down a rumor that the Pinnacle $25 dining credit is ending. Three recaps say Discovery class will not fit under Tampa's Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

Before Icon of the Seas left Miami, regulars on cruise forums had a request for anyone on the President’s Cruise: ask leadership about the comedy.

Someone did.

Royal Caribbean Blog’s Matt Hochberg recapped Sunday’s Common Ground Q&A in a video posted Oct. 6. CEO Michael Bayley seemed surprised by the question. Hochberg says he did “almost like a double take.”

Then the answer. Hochberg is reading Bayley in that video, and we are working from an auto-transcript. It is one source. Treat it as “per Royal Caribbean Blog,” not a clean recording.

Two sentences come through clean:

“I think the plan was not to remove comedy at all.”

“We’re going to spend more energy and time on comedy. We just took the venue away.”

The sentence between them is garbled on the auto-transcript. The sense of it, as Hochberg relays Bayley, is that more comedy is coming in the coming years. We are not printing that middle line as a quote.

More comedy, fewer comedy clubs

Hochberg says another executive stood up and said, “There is still comedy on those ships.” He had just named Oasis class and Legend of the Seas. In his telling, Bayley seemed surprised adult comedy was gone there.

Hochberg adds his own footnote. The question was framed as comedy, not adult comedy. Magicians and jugglers are still on the schedule. The comedy club is the thing that left.

More comedy. Fewer comedy clubs. That is the tension.

A rumor was waiting in the same room. Pinnacle members on Icon, Quantum, and Oasis class ships would lose the $25 dining credit they get in place of Coastal Kitchen.

The credit stays

Nope.

Nancy Ramos shut it down. Hochberg introduces her as Royal Caribbean’s assistant vice president of loyalty, affinity, and onboard marketing. His summary, from that same auto-transcript: the rumor is “a hundred percent not happening,” and she “completely squashed” it.

That is his spoken summary. It is not her script.

An earlier onboard clip from Luxury Properties International, filmed at Common Ground on Oct. 4, reported the same answer. Two independent sources back this one. The Oct. 6 video is what puts Ramos’s name on it.

Sorry, Tampa

Another question with a firm answer. Will Royal’s next class of ships ever sail from Tampa?

Per Hochberg’s recap, Bayley said there is “absolutely no chance” they fit under the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. “Absolutely no chance” is Hochberg’s paraphrase. He does not present it as a line Bayley printed.

Three recaps say the ships will not fit. Royal Caribbean Blog. Nicki on Deck’s Oct. 6 live. Addy and Terry’s Oct. 4 recap. Hochberg names the class: Discovery class. Physics wins.

The rest, briefly

From the same Royal Caribbean Blog video. One source. Paraphrased.

  • Galveston gets more ships, and bigger ships, but not until Perfect Day Mexico opens. Hochberg also says it could take some time.
  • Philadelphia is not seen as “a viable option,” since Baltimore already has a ship.
  • Suite Lounge access during the day, for Pinnacles shut out of it? An unnamed executive was “pretty receptive.” That phrase is Hochberg’s. It is not a new rule.

What we know, and what we don’t

We know:

  • Comedy came up at Common Ground. Bayley’s answer, per Hochberg, was that more comedy is coming, and not necessarily in the same venues.
  • The Pinnacle $25 dining credit is not going anywhere. Two independent sources.
  • Discovery class cannot get under Tampa’s bridge. Three recaps. “Absolutely no chance” is one recap’s paraphrase.

We don’t know yet:

  • Bayley’s exact wording on comedy. There is no clean recording or printed transcript.
  • What “more comedy” looks like, or which ships get it.
  • Whether the venues come back anywhere.

We’ll keep watching. If you are on board and hear more, tell us.
