What is changing on Carnival Freedom
Carnival Freedom is getting her signature look back. According to Carnival Freedom is getting a new funnel during its routine drydock in France, according to an update published by Carnival Cruise Line, with the company sharing a behind-the-scenes look at the new structure being added to the ship at the Chantier Naval de Marseille shipyard, Cruise Industry News reported on 19 September 2026.
This is not the ship’s first funnel repair. The pictures show a shorter funnel replacing the ship’s original, which was damaged by a lightning strike in March 2024, with Carnival’s traditional whale-tail top removed after the incident and the ship sailing with a straight funnel since. The lightning strike marked the second time the vessel’s funnel suffered significant damage, after the structure was partially destroyed by a fire incident during a visit to Grand Turk in May 2022, and the funnel had later been rebuilt to its signature form and size during a drydock at the Navantia shipyard in October 2023.
What guests will notice
If you have sailed Freedom in the last 18 months, you have been looking at a straight, wingless funnel instead of the whale-tail shape Carnival ships are known for. That changes once she leaves this drydock. Cruise Hive reported that videos shared from the dry dock shipyard in Marseille show Carnival Freedom is getting a new funnel during her update, and the ship also appears to be receiving the ‘From Sea to Shining Sea’ bow crest that will be introduced across the Carnival fleet.
Timeline for booked guests
The ship is not sailing right now, and this is scheduled downtime, not a surprise cancellation. Cruise Maven reported that the Carnival Freedom entered drydock in France earlier this month, after completing a trans-Atlantic crossing from Port Canaveral, and is now undergoing routine maintenance work at the Chantier Naval de Marseille. Cruise Hive puts a firm return date on it: Carnival Freedom will be in dry dock until early October, with the shipyard entering dry dock in Marseille, France on September 1, and is scheduled to remain out of service for refurbishment work until Friday, October 9, 2026.
After that, the ship does not go straight back to Florida. At that time, she will begin an 8-night Mediterranean sailing roundtrip from Barcelona, and following that first cruise, Carnival Freedom will set sail on a 13-night transatlantic cruise on Saturday, October 17 to return to Port Canaveral, Florida, bringing her new funnel with her.
Once home, it is business as usual. Before arriving back in its homeport in Central Florida, the Carnival Freedom will also visit the company’s private destination of Celebration Key in Grand Bahama, and in early November the 110,000-ton vessel will resume its regular schedule of four- and five-night cruises to the Bahamas from Port Canaveral, including visits to RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay and Nassau. Longer term, Cruise Maven notes the Carnival Freedom is scheduled to reposition to Norfolk in mid-2027, taking over Carnival Sunshine’s itineraries from Virginia.
What to do about it
If you are booked on Freedom’s Barcelona repositioning sailing or the October transatlantic, expect a ship with a new bow crest and its familiar whale-tail funnel back for the first time since early 2024. If you are booked on the November restart from Port Canaveral, nothing about your itinerary changes here. This is a cosmetic fix, not a schedule disruption.
