You are not going south to Cabo. The week runs up the California coast, then back through Ensenada.

Virgin posted the change on its travel advisory, marked updated 16 Oct 2026, for the Brilliant Lady voyage on 17 Oct. VV Insider, Rob Sammons, 17 Oct, and Cruise Hive, Calvin Musquez, 16 Oct, carry the same new ports.

What the week looks like now

You still leave Los Angeles on Saturday 17 Oct. You still come back on Saturday 24 Oct. The days in between moved.

DayNow, on Virgin’s 16 Oct page
Sat 17 OctDepart Los Angeles at 5 p.m.
Sun 18 OctAt sea
Mon 19 OctSan Francisco, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Tue 20 OctAt sea
Wed 21 OctSan Diego, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Thu 22 OctEnsenada, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Fri 23 OctAt sea
Sat 24 OctArrive Los Angeles at 6:30 a.m.

VV Insider prints the same clocks. Cruise Hive names the three new ports and the three dates, and it does not print the hours. Use the Virgin page for the hours.

The app can lag. Virgin says the new itinerary shows up once you set sail, so the phone may still list the old route while you are on the way to the terminal. The table above is the one to pack from.

What came off

Virgin’s page says it is swapping the three original ports for San Francisco, San Diego, and Ensenada. It mentions Cabo. It does not print Mazatlán or Puerto Vallarta.

Cruise Hive does. It says the original week called Cabo San Lucas on Monday 19 Oct, Mazatlán on Tuesday 20 Oct, and Puerto Vallarta on Wednesday 21 Oct, then returned to Los Angeles on 24 Oct. VV Insider describes the same lost Mexican Riviera week. Those two reports are the source for the three old names. The return date is the one piece the Virgin page also prints, at 6:30 a.m. on 24 Oct.

Cruise Hive says Virgin had already warned on 14 Oct that a change might be coming. The 16 Oct page is the decision.

Why Virgin turned around

The advisory says the forecasts for Hurricane Trudy have jumped around. It says the line is not too concerned about what is left of Hurricane Simon. Trudy is the problem. Virgin’s words:

Following the guidance of the National Hurricane Center, heading south could put the ship on the stronger, more dangerous side of the storm. That’s too much of a safety risk and a gamble we’re not willing to take.

VV Insider says Chief Operating Officer Michelle Bentubo sent travel advisors a message to the same effect, that the line would not take the risk. Her name is not on the public advisory. The quote above is the page. The Bentubo line is VV Insider’s account of the advisor note.

The position and the wind belong to the bulletins, not to a cruise-news summary. National Hurricane Center Advisory 12, at 3:00 a.m. CST on Friday 16 Oct, had Trudy at 120 mph and called it a Category 3. Advisory 14, at 3:00 p.m. CST the same day, had a Hurricane Hunter flight and put the wind at 85 mph. That bulletin calls Trudy a Category 1, about 225 miles southwest of Acapulco. Advisory 17, at 9:00 a.m. CST on Saturday 17 Oct, put the center about 265 miles west of Acapulco, with winds near 90 mph, moving northwest at 10 mph, and still expected to pass near the west-central Mexico coast later Saturday into Sunday. Cruise Hive’s line that the storm was around 200 miles southwest, a Category 3 for a while on 16 Oct and a Category 1 later that day, is that article’s summary of the same shift. The mile figure in the article is not the figure in Advisory 14 or Advisory 17. Norwegian Bliss is the other ship working around the same storm today.

Pack before you leave the house

San Francisco in the morning is not Cabo. Virgin says the California coast is likely much cooler than the ports you booked, especially mornings, evenings, and sea days. The packing list on the page is long pants, long sleeves, and a jacket. VV Insider says the same, and it singles out San Francisco. Buy the layer before you get to the pier. The terminal is a bad place to discover the bag is all shorts.

Shore Things, and the credit that is not here

If you booked a Shore Thing for a port that is no longer on the voyage, Virgin says you get an automatic full refund to your onboard folio. You do not have to request it. The page suggests putting that value toward Redemption Spa, Shake for Champagne, the High Street shops, or Up With a Twist.

Cruise Hive says Virgin did not confirm whether any unused folio credit goes back to the original payment. The page tells you where you can spend it. It does not mention your card. The 10 Oct notice, on this same URL before Virgin replaced it, refunded Shore Things to the original form of payment. That sentence is not the sentence on the page today.

A tour you booked outside Virgin is your call to that operator.

Shore Things for San Francisco, San Diego, and Ensenada open in the app once you are aboard. They are not something you can finish from the hotel tonight, if the page is right.

The 16 Oct advisory does not print Sailor Loot or a Future Voyage Credit. VV Insider says none was announced, and it contrasts this week with the 10 Oct sailing, which had both. The amounts from that week live on the earlier post. Do not copy them onto this booking unless Virgin sends a new note.

The three weeks before this one

This is the fourth Brilliant Lady week in a row with a weather change. The earlier three are already on this site.

The 26 Sep sailing lost Cabo, Mazatlán, and Puerto Vallarta for Hurricane Polo and picked up San Francisco, San Diego, Catalina Island, and Ensenada. VV Insider’s recap includes Catalina. Cruise Hive’s recap of that week names San Francisco, San Diego, and Ensenada and does not mention Catalina. Use the 26 Sep post for that sailing.

The 3 Oct sailing swapped Cabo for Ensenada after swell from Hurricane Rachel. Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta stayed.

The 10 Oct sailing replaced the whole Mexican Riviera with Santa Barbara, San Diego, and Ensenada. That is the week that came with Sailor Loot and a Future Voyage Credit.

What this means for you

If you sail today, pack the jacket, then ignore a Cabo listing that is still sitting in the app. Monday is San Francisco, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday is San Diego, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday is Ensenada, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. You are back in Los Angeles at 6:30 a.m. on 24 Oct. Watch the folio for the Shore Things refund. Leave Sailor Loot off the budget. Facts above follow Virgin’s advisory updated 16 Oct 2026, VV Insider on 17 Oct, and Cruise Hive on 16 Oct.

  1. TIER 1Virgin Voyages travel advisory, A Weather Update For Brilliant Lady, marked Updated Oct. 16, 2026, for the voyage on Oct. 17: after monitoring Hurricane Trudy, Virgin is adjusting the route and sailing a West Coast itinerary with San Francisco, San Diego, and Ensenada, Mexico, instead of heading south. The page says forecasts have varied, the line is not too concerned about the remnants of Hurricane Simon, and Trudy is more complicated. Following National Hurricane Center guidance, heading south could put the ship on the stronger, more dangerous side of the storm, which the page calls too much of a safety risk and a gamble the line is not willing to take. The updated voyage is depart Los Angeles Saturday 17 Oct at 5 p.m., at sea Sunday 18 Oct, San Francisco Monday 19 Oct from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., at sea Tuesday 20 Oct, San Diego Wednesday 21 Oct from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Ensenada Thursday 22 Oct from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at sea Friday 23 Oct, arrive Los Angeles Saturday 24 Oct at 6:30 a.m. The page says the three original ports are swapped for those three, mentions the sunny shores of Cabo, and does not print Mazatlán or Puerto Vallarta. The new itinerary shows in the app once the ship sets sail, so the app may still show the original route on the way to the terminal. Pack warmer layers, including long pants, long sleeves, and a jacket, because the California coast is likely cooler than the original destinations, especially mornings, evenings, and sea days. Shore Things booked for ports no longer on the voyage receive an automatic full refund to the onboard folio, which the page says can go toward Redemption Spa, Shake for Champagne, the High Street shops, or Up With a Twist. Independent tours go back to the operator. New Shore Things are bookable in the app once aboard. The page does not print Sailor Loot or a Future Voyage Credit.
Virgin Voyages, checked 16 Oct 2026 · Read 17 Oct 2026. Same advisory URL as the 3 Oct and 10 Oct notices. Virgin has replaced those texts with this one. The 10 Oct version refunded Shore Things to the original form of payment. This version says the onboard folio.
  2. TIER 2VV Insider, Rob Sammons, 17 Oct 2026: Virgin rerouted the 17 Oct 2026 Los Angeles Mexican Riviera sailing along the California coast because heading south could place the ship on the more dangerous side of Hurricane Trudy. The printed schedule matches the Virgin page, from a 5 p.m. departure on 17 Oct to a 6:30 a.m. return on 24 Oct, with San Francisco 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on 19 Oct, San Diego 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on 21 Oct, and Ensenada 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on 22 Oct. The article says the decision followed forecasts for Trudy and the remnants of Hurricane Simon, that the line is less concerned about Simon, and that Chief Operating Officer Michelle Bentubo told travel advisors the line would not take the safety risk. It says no compensation was announced, unlike the 10 Oct sailing's Sailor Loot and Future Voyage Credit. Shore Things for removed ports get an automatic full refund to the onboard folio, and sailors do not need to request it. Independent excursions go to the operator. New Shore Things open in the app once onboard. Pack long pants, long sleeves, and a jacket, especially for San Francisco. The article calls this the fourth straight weather disruption and says the 26 Sep week replaced Cabo, Mazatlán, and Puerto Vallarta with San Francisco, San Diego, Catalina Island, and Ensenada.
VV Insider, checked 17 Oct 2026 · Agrees with the Virgin page on the clocks and the folio refund. The Bentubo attribution and the statement that no Sailor Loot was announced are this article's. 3. TIER 2Cruise Hive, Calvin Musquez, 16 Oct 2026: Virgin posted a notice on 16 Oct confirming a full reroute of the 17 Oct 2026 sailing because of Hurricane Trudy's projected path. The original calls were Cabo San Lucas on 19 Oct, Mazatlán on 20 Oct, and Puerto Vallarta on 21 Oct, with a Los Angeles return on 24 Oct. The replacements are San Francisco on 19 Oct, San Diego on 21 Oct, and Ensenada on 22 Oct, and the 24 Oct return stays. The article quotes the notice that heading south could put the ship on the stronger, more dangerous side of the storm. An earlier 14 Oct notice had warned that the storm might affect the route. Guests should pack warmer clothes. Shore excursions booked through Virgin for the cancelled ports refund as credit to the onboard folio, and the article says the line did not confirm whether unused credit returns to the original payment. Third-party tours go to the operator. Replacement excursions open in the app once onboard. The article calls this the fourth straight sailing disrupted by tropical weather. Its recap of the 26 Sep week names San Francisco, San Diego, and Ensenada and does not mention Catalina Island. Its storm paragraph says Trudy was around 200 miles southwest of Acapulco, briefly a Category 3 on 16 Oct, then a Category 1 later that day.
