Virgin Voyages Resilient Lady: The Real Cost After the Gratuities Change
Virgin Voyages Resilient Lady: My Honest Review After 5 Voyages
This is a fifth Virgin Voyages sailing and a second trip on Resilient Lady, so the comparison here is not a first-timer’s culture shock. It is what changed since the last visit, checked against Virgin’s own current numbers instead of whatever this site said about the fare two years ago. Watch the full review: Virgin Voyages Resilient Lady: My Honest Review After 5 Voyages.
What the gratuities change costs you
Virgin’s original pitch was that tips came bundled into the fare. That ended on October 7, 2025, under a restructure Virgin calls VoyageFair Choices. Service gratuities now show up as their own line: $22 per Sailor per night if you pay onboard, or $20 a night if you prepay before you sail. Virgin’s position is that base fares dropped by the same amount, so the total cost is meant to land close to where it was before. Prepaid gratuities lock in and do not refund. Onboard charges can still be adjusted at Sailor Services if service fell short.
The practical effect: a five-night Sea Terrace sailing now carries a gratuities line worth $100 to $110 that used to sit inside the sticker price. Budget for it as its own cost, not a rounding error.
Is the Bar Tab worth preloading
Virgin does not sell a traditional drink package. Instead you load a refundable Bar Tab onto your wristband and pay per drink, with a bonus for loading it in advance. A $300 preload currently earns a $50 bonus, and the bonus scales up through $1,000 preloaded for a $250 bonus. The catch: the bonus only applies to a Bar Tab loaded at least 24 hours before your sailing. Money added once you are onboard gets no bonus at all, so this only pays off if you plan ahead of the cruise, not once you are standing at a bar wishing you had.
Basic drinks come included regardless: still and sparkling water, juice, soda, tea and drip coffee, available around the clock in The Galley. Specialty coffee, alcohol and premium menu items are what draw down the Bar Tab.
What’s included, compared with Royal Caribbean
Resilient Lady runs more than 20 eateries with no cover charge to reserve any of them, including all six signature restaurants. That is a structural difference from Royal Caribbean, where several comparable venues carry a specialty upcharge on top of the cruise fare. The exception worth knowing: select menus carry individually priced “Treat Yourself” items, and ticketed dinner shows cost extra on top of the included venues.
Group fitness classes and the arcade come with the fare too, both of which are pay-per-use or a per-play charge on most mainstream ships. What does not come included: a drink package option, self-service laundry anywhere on the ship, and the thermal suite in the spa, which is a paid add-on.
The Sea Terrace, with three people in it
A Sea Terrace is Resilient Lady’s standard balcony category, built around a two-person layout with the red hammock as its signature detail. Sailing it with three adults means a pull-down top bunk, and it is a tighter fit than the marketing photos suggest. Storage runs short for three people’s bags between the drawers and the closet, and there is nowhere on the ship to do a load of laundry yourself to stretch a smaller carry-on.
Two things are worth knowing before you book a Sea Terrace with a third person. First, request anything you need, like a mattress topper, as early as possible and confirm it landed. Second, cabin status runs through the in-room tablet and a door indicator instead of a hang tag. Set your room to “Clean” there so your steward knows to service it. It is easy to miss and it is the difference between a made-up cabin and one that sits untouched all day.
The hammock earns its reputation. It is more comfortable than it looks in photos, and it is the best seat in a cabin that otherwise shows its strain with three people using it.
Who this ship is for
Resilient Lady is 18-plus only, so this is not a family-ship comparison. Boarding starts at 2pm, hours later than the mainstream lines, which reshapes the whole first day. There are no waterslides, no rock wall, no flowrider. If those are what you are booking a cruise for, look elsewhere. If what you want is a food-forward, design-forward ship with no buffet crowd and no specialty-dining upcharge, the structure here still delivers that. The gratuities change just means you should price it that way going in, not assume the old bundled-tip math still applies.
