Is Cruise Line Loyalty Costing You a Better Vacation?
Is Cruise Line Loyalty Costing You a Better Vacation?
Loyalty is worth it when the perks, ships, and itineraries fit the trip you want. It costs you when you skip comparing other lines out of habit.
Cruise lines spend years teaching you to feel like a tribe. Pins. Lounges. Lanyards. Status names. Rivalry is part of the product. Your favorite line can still be a preference. Treat it like a preference, and you keep the upside without locking out better trips.
Most shoppers never build a shortlist
A July 2026 Verve study of U.S. cruise search, AI conversations, and surveys put the average at 1.12 brands considered per shopper. Nearly 91% engaged just one brand. Only 8.9% looked at two or more.
That number is load-bearing and comes from Verve’s own Wave Season deck, with trade writeups in late August 2026. If you only ever open one line’s site, you are the normal case. You are also easy to keep.
Habit does the rest. Past cruise spend and a half-earned tier feel like wasted progress if you book elsewhere. That pull is classic sunk-cost thinking. The money already spent does not change which ship fits next year’s trip.
Carnival ended status for life for most members
Carnival announced Carnival Rewards on June 18, 2025. The old VIFP Club rewarded days sailed and kept earned tiers. The new program splits Carnival Rewards Points you can redeem from Status Qualifying Stars that unlock Red, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond.
Carnival’s own June 2025 release said status is earned over a two-year period and retained for the following two years. That is the requalify cycle. You no longer keep most tiers forever by default.
Carnival Rewards launched Sept. 1, 2026, after an earlier June 1, 2026 target. The launch release sets Stars at 10,000 for Gold, 50,000 for Platinum, and 100,000 for Diamond. Status earns in a two-year Status Qualifying Window and carries through the rest of that window plus the next two-year enjoyment window. The first qualifying period runs Sept. 1, 2026 through Dec. 31, 2028.
Carnival did soften the blow for top legacy members. Guests who reached VIFP Diamond by May 31, 2026 keep lifetime Diamond under Carnival Rewards. Platinum VIFP members got a 10,000-star boost each two-year cycle. Everyone else plans around requalification.
If you were stacking Carnival nights for a pin you no longer enjoy, the program now asks whether the next two years of spend still make sense.
Royal Caribbean Group lets points follow the brand you choose
Royal Caribbean Group’s Points Choice covers Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and Silversea. Eligible loyalty points from sailings departing on or after Jan. 30, 2026 can apply to Crown & Anchor, Captain’s Club, or Venetian Society.
You must already belong to the program you pick. Submit a Points Choice request before the sailing or within 14 days after. Points from earlier sailings do not move. Royal Caribbean’s FAQ says you file a request each sailing for now, with a later preference center planned.
This does not erase brand differences. It does cut the penalty for trying a sister line while you still care about one status ladder.
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings honors status across three brands
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings runs a Status Honoring Program across Norwegian, Oceania, and Regent Seven Seas. Your current tier from Latitudes Rewards, Oceania Club, or Seven Seas Society can be honored at the closest matching tier on the brand you sail, for that cruise only.
Requests opened Sept. 29, 2025. The first eligible sailings departed Oct. 15, 2025. Email the brand you are boarding at least 10 days before departure. Points stay with the brand you sail. Milestone perks such as free cruises, upgrades, and commemorative gifts are excluded.
If you want an Oceania food-forward week or a Regent suite product without dumping Norwegian status for that sailing, this is the official path. File the request. Do not assume the front desk invents it on embarkation day.
The case for staying loyal still exists
Cruise Critic collected member views on whether loyalty pays. The through-line is consistent. People stay because they like the product. Perks matter when itinerary and price are already close. Free laundry, drinks, specialty dining, or a real discount can tip a toss-up.
That case fails when loyalty is the only reason you refuse to open a second site. A lounge pass does not fix a weak itinerary. A pin does not fix a ship you have outgrown.
How to decide the next booking
Write down the trip you want first. Destination, dates, budget, ship size, and must-have inclusions. Then price your usual line against at least one alternative.
Keep your home line when the total package wins, including loyalty value you will use. Switch when another line wins on itinerary, ship, or fare after you count the perks you would lose.
Favorite line is a preference. Run the comparison every time so the preference does not become a tax.
